Artist Statement
In my recent analog work, I explore the relationships between the body-mind continuum, my identity, and the creative impulse. In a process-oriented approach, I employ the palimpsest and hybrid nature of mixed-media as a tool for self-excavation. Through synthesizing materials and techniques, I investigate the duality of my own identity and inner landscape as a path to an increasingly liberatory creative practice.
My fascination with the somatic and energetic aspects of mark-making compels me to dance between spontaneity and intentionality. I play with the tension between ritual and disruption, layering gestural imprints that reflect my sensory responses to texture, materials, and body movements. My process is an ongoing experiment in biomimicry and investigating attachment to outcome: if I feel myself becoming attached to a mark or gesture, I often will intentionally interrupt it and observe the sensations and thoughts that arise. If I feel resistance, I move to embrace the discomfort and allow it to inform me. I relate this to the constant, adaptive change we see in biological systems that arise through the interplay of repetition and novelty.
This process challenges me to be attentive to inflexible mindsets around identity and self-perception, and to defy dominant norms and conventions that externally reinforce rigidity. This process is a space both to root and to expand through deepening self-knowledge and expressive action.
